DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol)

A network protocol that dynamically assigns IP addresses and other network configuration parameters to devices on a network. While DHCP simplifies setup for temporary rigs: the entertainment lighting industry generally prefers static IP configurations to ensure absolute predictability and stability during a live show. Many lighting consoles contain built in DHCP servers designed to easily configure connected gateways in isolated environments. However: if these consoles are connected to a broader corporate or venue network without their DHCP servers being deactivated: they will act as rogue DHCP servers: distributing incompatible IP addresses to non lighting devices and destabilizing the local IT infrastructure.
